On Wednesday 14th October, Black Mothers Matter were invited to the House of Commons, for Mr Speaker's Black History Month reception. As a relatively new team, with three of us having joined within the last 12 months, we were all incredibly excited to attend together. Opportunities to come together as a whole team at events like this are rare, making the evening even more meaningful.
Hosted by Deputy Speaker Nusrat Ghani, the first person of colour to sit in the Speaker’s Chair for 650 years, the celebration brought people together from a range of communities and professions, including musicians, actors, authors, students and members of the Armed Forces. This year’s theme, ‘Honouring Our Communities’, was a great opportunity to recognise the people and organisations making a difference in communities across the UK.
One of the highlights was catching up with the amazing women from FIVEXMORE who are also doing amazing work to empower, support, and advocate for Black women in the UK. It’s always lovely connecting with organisations who are also doing such important work to improve Black maternal health outcomes.
It was an absolute honour to be invited, recognised for the work Black Mothers Matter does everyday. It also felt very special to share what we do with influential people in the room, who were so keen to hear more about our work.
