There are various community perinatal groups but in many scenarios people from Black communities do not always have the privilege to relax and be their most authentic self in these spaces, because they are white lead and white dominated. Our groups are an option for Black women, by Black women.

We provide

  • mental health, wellbeing and peer support;

  • relevant, accurate information on medical conditions that disproportionately effect Black people during pregnancy;

  • culturally considered and appropriate perinatal information;

  • access and signposting to professionals.

These groups are vital for the community and break down barriers - in both directions - by providing a safer environment for the community and professionals to engage.

It’s hard to get across the positivity of the atmosphere in an email but the extraordinary stories of water births with midwives joining in dancing by the pool, unplanned home births and the sheer resilience of women in sometimes difficult circumstances was truly inspiring.

There have been countless times where I felt out of place… I love listening and being a part of the conversations … It not only makes me feel less anxious to share, but comfortable knowing I’m not suffering alone.

Many women have told me that they wouldn’t have attended an NHS class …due to my visit [they] knew where to refer and how to get help. I am improving my knowledge on issues that affect Black women particularly in the perinatal period and has made me reflect on my own practice.

A moment of feeling supported and loved brings light to any black mother’s journey, because so often we don’t receive this compassion from others – from medical professionals to our own family members sometimes. So, thank you again for everything you are doing for our community and for the reminder that we matter.
